Addressing supporters at a New York rally, Trump emphasized that the slight increase in fuel costs is a necessary trade-off to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weaponry. He further suggested a bold move of declaring the strait as a U.S. territory following a potential victory over Iran.
Iran has firmly rebuffed Trump’s remarks, asserting its control over the strategic waterway. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the blockade would persist until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as Iran’s triumph. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that Tehran is not inclined to resume negotiations with Washington, maintaining that the flow of shipping through the strait would only recommence if the U.S. meets Iran’s stipulations.
The ongoing standoff has severely affected tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for oil and natural gas exports worldwide. This disruption has led to a surge in crude oil prices, consequently driving up fuel costs. Currently, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase from the previous year. Brent crude prices have also been on an upward trajectory, heading towards a significant weekly rise.
The economic ramifications extend to Iran, where President Masoud Pezeshkian attributes the nation’s growing inflation to the U.S.-imposed blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on its oil exports. In response to the stalled ceasefire talks, the Trump administration has hinted at the possibility of implementing further financial penalties against Tehran.
